History:
Israel Dolphin Submarine submarines are a series of diesel-electric submarines developed for the Israeli Navy, based on the German Type 209 design but heavily modified to meet Israeli requirements. Built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in German, the program began in the 1990s, with partial German government funding following the Gulf War. The first three submarines - Dolphin, Leviathan, and Tekuma - were delivered between 1999 and 2000.
A second batch, often referred to as the Dolphin-II class, includes Tanin, Rahav, and Drakon. These newer submarines, delivered from 2014 onward, are larger and equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP), allowing them to remain submerged longer. Israel Dolphin Submarine is armed with torpedoes and cruise missiles, and it’s widely believed that they can carry nuclear-capable missiles, providing Israel with a second-strike capability, though this remains officially unconfirmed.
Israel Dolphin Submarine plays a crucial role in Israel's naval deterrence and strategic defense posture. Operating in the Mediterranean and beyond, these submarines offer stealth, endurance, and strike capabilities. A third batch, known as the Dakar-class, is currently under construction, continuing Israel's investment in undersea warfare and advanced naval technology.
